Development

The Development Office at St. Joseph Catholic School strives improve the modes of communication to parents, donors and friends of St. Joseph.  Please search through the website to learn about the wonderful things happening at St. Joseph Catholic School!

In Development, we continually look to the future to ensure that Gospel values and excellence in education will be made available for generations to come.  Like many parish schools, the tuition we charge does not cover the actual cost of educating our students.  Therefore, fundraising activities such as Sausage Fest, Auction and $crip are necessary to make up for this shortfall.  Our Principal, School Advisory Board and Pastor work diligently to keep tuition at the lowest possible level. This enables St Joseph School to serve families of all backgrounds and socio-economic levels.

St. Joseph Catholic School promotes a variety of ways for individuals and businesses to support our school.

These opportunities consist of:

  • Sausage Fest

  • St. Joseph Foundation Wine & Art Show

  • Auction

  • $crip

  • Cost of Education Appeal

  • St. Joseph Foundation Educational Endowment Fund

  • Grants

  • Matching Gifts

ALUMNI

Welcome Alumni

Graduation is not an end—rather, it is the next step in what we hope is a life-long relationship with St. Joseph Catholic School. We offer this page as a place for alumni to connect with other alumni, keep current with events and activities, and to stay involved with St. Joseph Catholic School and our mission to develop students with a commitment to Gospel values, academic excellence and individual fulfillment.  Thank you for visiting the St. Joseph Catholic School Alumni web page.  This page is still a work in progress, so if you have ideas or suggestions, please contact Julie Sumpter at (360) 696-2586 or Lisa Nevitt (Hotchkiss '75) (360) 735-5980.

AUCTION

2007 marks St. Joseph Catholic School’s thirteenth annual benefit auction and dinner.  Since its inception, the auction has raised over $1.5 million net profit to benefit school programs and facilities.  Specifically, funds raised support school improvements such as textbooks and technology purchases, tuition assistance for school families in need, the St. Joseph School Foundation, and help to reduce debt on the school wing and other projects.  Each auction has a theme and is organized by a large volunteer committee made up of school parents.  It is a great way to get SHARE hours and be involved.

Parents contribute to the Auction as set forth in the Tuition Contract:

“In order to more equally share the fund-raising commitments and to avoid involving students in fund-raising, we (I) will support the fund-raising needed to sustain the programs at St. Joseph School as listed below:

We will contribute to the class project for auction

We will procure an auction item valued at $75 or donate $75 cash toward the Auction.  This donation is to be made by February 15, 2006.”

For information regarding the Auction, contact Courtney Givens, Events Manager, at 696-2586 or courtneyg@stjoevan.org.

Cost of Education Appeal

During the 2006/2007 school year, it is anticipated that St. Joseph Catholic School will spend approximately $5,440 to educate each student.  Our tuition and fees cover approximately 73% of these costs.  The 27% gap is filled largely by fundraising and parish subsidy.  Although we implement incremental tuition increases on a regular basis, a large increase in tuition purely for the purpose of “closing the gap” would place too great a burden on many parents.  To support the school in meeting these increasing financial obligations, we implemented a Cost of Education Appeal in 2002 that encourages families who are financially capable, to pay the actual cost of educating their student(s) with a tax deductible charitable gift.

If you would like more information about the Cost of Education Appeal, please contact the Development Office for more information.

St. Joseph Foundation Wine & Art Show

St. Joseph Catholic School Receives Grant from Bank of America Charitable Foundation
This article and photo ran in the November 2005 issue of Lacamas Life Magazine.

St. Joseph Catholic School, serving Kindergarten through 8th grades in Vancouver, WA, recently applied for and was awarded a $5,000 grant from Bank of America Charitable Foundation.  The funds have been used to help strengthen the Math and Science curriculum by purchasing graphing calculators and cordless, rechargeable microscopes for the school.  In addition, video interface technology was also purchased for the calculators and microscopes, allowing teachers and students to display work onto computers and classroom television screens.

John Bala, President of Southwest Washington Bank of America, presented St. Joseph Catholic School Principal, Lesley Harrison, with a $5,000 check at Back to School Night in September.  “Bank of America is proud to support excellence in education,“ he announced to the parents and school staff.  “We are glad to be able to help enhance the math and science curriculum for the students of St. Joseph School.”

The Bank of America Charitable Foundation seeks opportunities to touch the communities and neighborhoods in which they do business, helping them grow and prosper.  The Foundation’s funding priorities in the Portland and Vancouver area are focused on community development, education, arts and culture.

iQ Credit Union “Read With Me” Grant

St. Joseph Catholic School applied for and received an iQ Credit Union "Read With Me" grant for 250 Scholastic books, the maximum number of books allowed by the grant guidelines.  Grant recipients are allowed to request books by reading level (levels K-6) and by number of boys/girls.  The books received from iQ Credit Union will be used to kick-off St. Joseph School’s summer reading program at the end of the school year.  Each student in grades 1-5 will receive one book to keep as their own.  This gift will get them started and excited for a summer of reading - a chance to leave the real world and enter the creative world that stories bring.  In the fall, students may return their summer reading log to their new teacher and earn prizes based on the amount of time spent reading.  The summer reading program will encourage students to become better readers and boost their self-esteem in reading.  A huge thank you goes out to iQ Credit Union for their generosity and help in creating a generation of lifelong readers!

MATCHING GIFTS

Many major corporations offer matching gift programs. With these programs, the corporation will match any donation you make to St. Joseph Catholic School. If this opportunity is available to you, it is an excellent way to maximize the power of your gift.  To find out if your company has a matching gift program simply contact your Human Resources department. They will give you a simple form to fill out, and then give that form to the St. Joseph School Development Office.  We will submit it to the corporation with the non-profit information required.

Some corporations donate products as well as cash.  Product donations are called “in-kind donations.”  Often, the corporation will donate products or services to our school if the employee pays a fraction of the cost.  For example, Hewlett Packard donates computer printers and other products at a 3:1 ratio.  The corporation pays 75% of the product cost and the employee pays 25%.  In other words, your gift can triple in size with no additional cost to you!

Many corporations also have a corporate giving campaign.  These corporate campaigns allow employees to donate from their paycheck, therefore decreasing the employee's taxable income.  Companies such as Hewlett Packard, PGE and Wells Fargo are already participating.

Please contact the Development Office for more information regarding Corporate Matching Programs.

SAUSAGE FEST

In the spring of 1972, the St. Joseph School Board was faced with finding a way to raise money or cancel the 7th and 8th grades.  With the support of Father Kearney, the planning committee and many parishioners donated materials, money and time to build booths, obtain supplies and promote the Sausage Fest.  The first stage and buildings, built by parishioners, were in use for 25 years, and then replaced.  The first festival had fresh fruit, vegetables, a chicken wagon, fashion shows and a dunk tank.  The first year, they made just over $12,000.

More than 30 years later, the Sausage Fest remains a tradition filled with fun for the whole family.  It is held annually on the weekend following Labor Day.  Admission is FREE.  The main stage gives local dance studios the opportunity to perform as well as provide live family entertainment.  In our Fest Garden there is music, dancing, catching up with old friends and making new.

Activities you can find at the Fest

Booths -  Food is what keeps bringing the guests back every year.  At the Fest you can enjoy Sausage Sandwiches, Sausage on a Stick or our famous Sausage Dinner.  Chicken, hamburger, corn on the cob, potato, elephant ears and all the sweets you can imagine are available too.

Carnival - The carnival rides and games are provided by Hawthorne Family Shows.  Pre-sale ride tickets are available for a month in advance.  Haworth Family Shows provides rides sure to entertain youngsters of all ages including the Zipper, bumper cars, the Graviton, the Sizzler and Star Trooper. The special-discount is offered for ticket purchases prior to the start of the Fest at eight (8) tickets for $10 --close to 50% savings over the regular Fest Weekend price.

Dinner -  A Sausage dinner is available in Haydock Hall all three days of the Fest.  This dinner is for those Fest goers who would rather sit down to a nice indoor meal than at the picnic tables in the middle of the Fest.

Arts & Crafts Booths -  The arts & crafts booths are the favorites of many Fest goers.

Local artists and crafters have an opportunity to show their wares.  Many colorful and exciting items are available at this one of a kind event.

Fest Garden - Your visit to the Vancouver Sausage Fest would not be complete without a trip to the Fest Garden.  In addition to the same wonderful food available in the main part of the Fest, the Garden has beer and wine available.  Also, live music plays Friday and throughout the day on Saturday and Sunday.  In the evening, exciting bands turn the Fest Garden into a fun meeting place for new and old friends alike.

Parking - Free satellite parking with shuttle service is located at McLoughlin Middle School and Marshall Elementary School. Handicapped parking is also available on the parish grounds.

$CRIP

$crip is another word for GIFT CERTIFICATE.  The gift certificates that $crip sells are just like the ones you purchase at grocery stores, restaurants or retail stores with one difference. They benefit St. Joseph Catholic School and Parish!

St. Joseph School buys $crip gift certificates from national providers and local businesses at a discount and then resells them at face value.  For example, the school purchases a $20 Safeway card for $19, and you purchase it from the school for its face value of $20.  You get $20 to spend on Safeway groceries, Safeway gets $19 and our school gets the other dollar!

Each school family, as part of their fundraising support, is required to purchase $crip in the amount needed to earn $150.00 in profit for the school or the family can choose to donate $150.00 to cover their share of the $crip support.  Additionally, if a family exceeds the $150 requirement, $0.90 of every $1.00 over $150 can be applied toward fees for the following year.   The $crip year begins May 1 of the current school year and ends the following April 30.

$crip may be purchased after weekend Masses, during scheduled weekday times, or by sending a same-day order form to school.  $crip is a great way to pay for those everyday purchases you’d make anyway, and the school benefits!

Forms are available in the school office or see link on HOME page.
