Art Literacy Program

The themes for the 2007-2008 school year are: Calder and The Circus, Machines, Landscapes, Emotions, Watercolors, Period Art (Fort Vancouver).

Volunteer Art Docents present a series of art portfolios to classrooms throughout the school year. This program provides the opportunity for parent volunteers to share their appreciation and love of the fine arts with the students. The program enhanced the children's learning experience through exposure to the works of famous artists.

The Art Literacy Program was established 1986 at St Joseph School, and since 2005 the program has been based on the school's fine art print library.

The Art Department helps the Docents to co-ordinate their presentations with what the children are learning in art classes.

Docents meet with the art Department at the beginning of the month to discuss the art portfolio to be presented. The Docents then work directly with the teachers to co-ordinate their presentations for the classrooms. Each presentation typically includes a discussion of the prints as well as a hands on activity selected by the Docent. Docents can work on their own or as teams. This is a great opportunity for parents to share in the classroom experience with their children.

CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK

“Catholic Schools Light the Way”
January 22 – February 2, 2008

Catholic Schools Week is a national event held annually to celebrate Catholic Schools.  The 2008 national theme is “Catholic Schools Light the Way” and the slogan says it all.  Catholic Schools are successful, our students are excelling, and every day we’re making a difference in our communities and in the world.

“We see the marvelous reality of Catholic education each day at our school, and we invite everyone to join in our celebration!”  ~ St. Joseph Catholic School principal, Lesley Harrison.

Lunch Program

Welcome
The St. Joseph School hot lunch program operates five days a week.  Every day your child can choose one of three options:  (1) Hot entrée or (2) Yogurt meal, both of which include all side dishes listed on the menu; or (3) Salad bar, which includes a fresh baked roll, lettuce, a variety of fruit and veggies, cottage cheese and meat.  Each meal comes with one carton of 1% milk or one carton of non-fat chocolate milk.   The cost of lunch or salad bar is $2.50 for students and $3.00 for adults.  Extra milk may be purchased for $.40. A menu will go home once a month.  Your child’s teacher will take a count each morning and record each child’s lunch choice or milk choice, to go with their cold lunch.

Parents are always welcome to have lunch with their children.  Please call ahead (by 9:30 am) and let Sheri or Anne know which menu option you would like.  This is very important so that we are sure to have enough hot entrees for everyone.

Payment
You may send a check or cash to your child to give to the teacher or the school office.  Just make sure it is clearly labeled with your child’s name.  You may use one check to pay for more than one child, just indicate the children’s names and how you would like the money applied.

If your child has less than $5.00 in their account, our cashier will stamp their hand.  This is an indication to you that your child needs more lunch money.  If a student forgets their lunch, they can charge a regular lunch for the day.  Please note that once a week we will send home student accountings if they are in a negative balance situation.  Once a student has reached a balance of $-5.00 he/she will be subject to an emergency lunch, which consists of a cheese sandwich, fruit and milk.

St. Joseph School does offer the Federal Lunch Program for those in need.  This is a confidential program.  If you think you might qualify, please see Anne in the school office. St. Joseph School is an equal opportunity provider.

Food Allergies
If your child has a food allergy, please be sure to list those allergies on the form given to you with your summer packet.  If a new allergy arises, please let us know!  We do not serve anything with peanuts, although we do serve cookies periodically, which are processed in plants that use peanuts.  We also occasionally serve wheat rolls with the yogurt meal and salad bar.  If your child is lactose intolerant, please send a note from your doctor to the school office so that we are able to give your student juice instead of milk.  If your child is SO allergic to any food that they cannot even sit next to someone eating that food, please make sure that the school office, their teacher and lunchroom staff are aware of this.

Volunteers
The lunch program is always in need of more moms and dads to lend a helping hand with serving, preparing foods, and receiving/putting away stock along with other duties.  It is a great way to earn share hours, and the children are happy to see their parents serving lunch to their friends.  Any time you can spare between 8:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. would be greatly appreciated. Please call Suzy Knight  (Cafeteria Director) at 696-2586 M-F, 8:30a-11a or 1p-2p.

We enjoy are look forward to serving your children and having a great school year!

Parents in Prayer

Mission
Parents in Prayer joins together in prayer, with Mary our Mother, to pray for the needs of our students, staff and school families.

Purpose
By joining together as a school community in prayer, we draw our strength and direction from God.  Through the intercession of Our Blessed Mother, we commit our needs and dreams to Him for our school and our families.

Prayer Intention Book
Students, staff and parents are encouraged to write prayer requests in the Prayer Intention Book placed in the school hallway.  This book will be present at all Wednesday morning and monthly school Masses.  It is also present each Wednesday after Mass where parents can pray the rosary for the intentions inside.

Praying the Rosary
Please join us after Wednesday morning Mass when we gather to pray the rosary.  We use a prayer sheet that lists all of the mysteries of the rosary and all of the prayers.  It is a comfortable environment for someone who is new to the rosary as well as someone who has prayed it for years.  Young children are welcome.  We meet in the Parish Hall or the Nursery directly after Mass, and it takes less than a half-hour of your time!

Gospel Message
Above the Prayer Intention Book, a message is posted each week highlighting the Gospel message for the following Sunday.  Each classroom also has a copy so that our students have time to know and reflect on the Gospel.

Parent Teacher Organization (PTO)

Every St. Joseph Catholic School parent or guardian is a member of the Parent Teacher Organization.

Regularly schedule “Community Building” social events for our school community, helping to foster a strong sense of community for students, parents, administration and teachers (i.e.: Sock Hop, Field Day, Advent Program, etc.)

Every St. Joseph Catholic School parent or guardian is a member of the Parent Teacher Organization.  All are welcome to attend monthly meetings (alternating between days and evenings) to gather, socialize and discuss topics of interest.

PTO raises funds with a holiday wreath sale, book fair and box tops/Cambell’s Soup collection.  With funds raised, donations are made to the classrooms and the library; educational assemblies are scheduled and staff is assured of how much they are appreciated.
