ALTAR SERVERS

The St. Joseph School students assist the Parish Priests at weekend Masses, school Masses, funerals, weddings and other church events.  Through altar serving, the students learn about responsibility, reverence, and serving the church through a ministry.

Students may choose if they would like to serve for Masses, funerals and weddings.  Students attend training once a year in order to be an altar server.  They are honored with an appreciation party given by the Knights of Columbus.

CAMP FIRE

Camp Fire teaches students to build leadership, communication, and life skills.  Many activities revolve around protecting and understanding our natural environment.  Another important goal is to serve the community through teamwork.  Students from kindergarten to eighth grade can participate in Camp Fire.

Camp Fire has a great deal of flexibility.  Members and adults can choose which areas to explore and to what depth.  Children are grouped into small numbers; therefore, the participation of each member is important.  They learn responsibility to others and have many opportunities to help others in the community.  They visit the elderly, make Thanksgiving cards for the St. Vincent De Paul food baskets, make place mats for the homeless Christmas dinner, and organize a school-wide drive for items that a local shelter may need.

The curriculum available to Camp Fire clubs ranges from safety for the younger children, pursuing individual interests for middle school kids, to complex issues like dating, drugs and alcohol use for older teen clubs.

CHESS CLUB

The St. Joseph Chess Club meets after school and is available to students in the 1st - 8th grades. The Chess Club meets November through Spring Break. We offer beginning and intermediate level instruction depending upon the students’ needs. Experienced players are encouraged to participate as a team in local area tournaments. For several years, St. Joseph has had students qualify and compete in the Washington State Elementary Chess Championships.

CHOIR

Students from the second to eighth grade are encouraged to participate in the Parish Children’s or Junior choir.  The choirs sing once a month at the Parish Masses, as well as for special liturgies, such as Christmas, Easter, and First Communion.  Students make a commitment to rehearse once a week as a team and to share their musical talents with the entire St. Joseph Parish.

CUB SCOUTS

St. Joseph Catholic School’s Cub Scout program is open to all boys in Grades 1 – 5.  Through monthly pack meetings and ongoing den activities, our Scouts build character, increase their citizenship, and develop personal physical, mental and emotional fitness.  Parent volunteers plan and run fun pack meetings that may include activities such as: pinewood derby races, space derby races, Halloween cake auction, bike rodeo, Olympics, and much more!  Check out Cub Scouting to learn more about us!

CYO SPORTS PROGRAM

St. Joseph Catholic School participates in the Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) athletic activities with other schools in the greater Portland metropolitan area. We follow the philosophy and guidelines set forth by CYO, as well as those of the St. Joseph Parish and School.

The athletic opportunities through St. Joseph CYO program exist to continue the student’s educational learning in the area of healthy competition, teamwork, healthy physical skills and habits, and striving to be the best one can be.

The commitment involved in playing CYO Sports is generally practicing twice a week after school and competitions on Saturdays. This may vary depending on the age and program. Each program also has a participation fee that covers the CYO registration, costs of competition, equipment and miscellaneous expenses.

St. Joseph CYO Activities:

  • Fall: Volleyball – girls grades 3-8

  • Football – grades 3-8

  • Hotshots Basketball – coed grades 1-2

GIRL SCOUTS

Girl Scouts is an educational dedicated solely to girls in kindergarten through eighth grade.  A small group environment encourages girls to develop strong values, a social conscience, and the conviction of their own self-worth.

Scouts may choose badges to work toward and learn about topics such as technology and science, the arts, the environment, health and fitness.  Girls learn how to work in small groups, share, and listen.  Girl Scouts promise to serve God and country.

LEGO ROBOTICS

St. Joseph Catholic School began a Lego Robotics Team in 2002.  We use a challenge developed by the FIRST LEGO League, in which the kids learn to design and build autonomous robots using special LEGO kits.  The FIRST LEGO League (FLL) program is an excellent way for young people, ages 9 to 14, to experience the excitement of technical creativity.  Young participants can build a robot and compete in a friendly robotics event specially designed for their age group. Using LEGO bricks and other elements such as sensors, motors, and gears, teams gain hands-on experience in engineering and computer programming principles as they construct and program their unique robot inventions. Specifically, the teams use the Lego kit called "Mindstorms Robotics Invention Set."

This extra-curricular program includes a 10- to 12-week period in which youngsters form teams, develop robots that can respond to individual tasks as part of an overall Challenge, and then compete against other teams in tournaments around the state.  St. Joseph Teams have received top awards in various local and state tournaments every year since the program began.

Cause for celebration!  This year over 330 teams entered into 16 local tournaments. Both of St. Joseph’s Lego teams did extremely well at a recent tournament held at Salmon Creek Elementary on 12/3/05.  The "SUB 1" team won the overall tournament (the Directors Award) and has been invited to the State Tournament.  The “Lego Lads” team won in the Young Team classification and is also invited to State. Congratulations to our Lego teams!

MAD SCIENCE

Mission

“Our goal is to spark the imagination of kids by providing them with exciting hands-on activities that will instill a clearer understanding of what science is and how it affects the world around them.”

St. Joseph School offers the Mad Science program twice per year, usually in the fall and spring.  Each session lasts eight weeks and is held after school one hour per week.  The topics are different for each session so that students can attend both in the fall and spring.  Registration occurs about three weeks before a session begins.  This program is offered to grades K – 6 and is very popular, so registration is on a first-come basis.  Mad Science sets the cost of the program, which, in the past, has been approximately $70 per session.

RC CHALLENGE

Students come from all over the Northwest and British Columbia to compete in the Roman Catholic Challenge, a knowledge bowl for young Catholic scholars.  Students have fun learning about the faith as they get ready to compete for cash prizes in the “Jeopardy style” contest that pits 4-person teams against each other in a match of wits on topics like Church history, the Saints, scripture, and doctrine. Students in grades 5th through 8th are invited to form 4-person teams to compete. Competition is co-ed; division 1 is 5th-6th grade; division 2 is 7th-8th grade. For more information, contact Terri Gilbride 823-2821 or see the website www.rcchallenge.com.

YOUTH MINISTRY

All middle school teens in 6th, 7th and 8th grade are invited to The EDGE Middle School Youth Ministry program on Wednesday nights in the Parish Hall from 6-7:30 p.m. Through these gatherings, teens learn about our faith, share fellowship and build friendships. Through icebreakers and team building exercises, the teens form a wonderful community of faith that is like family. The CORE Team looks forward each week to facilitating EDGE Nights and building relationships in order to help our teens grow closer to Christ. It is our hope that the teens will continue to build a sense of faith and life in the ministry of the Church.

Highlights of EDGE Nights include teachings on the Old Testament, New Testament and teen issues as seen through a Catholic perspective. Through PowerPoint presentations, skits, creative art activities, interactive gaming e.g. Catholic Jeopardy and Team Pictionary, and talks shared by the CORE Team, teens have the opportunity to grow deeper in their understanding of Church teaching and faith. Through social events like the Mystery Fun Night and Kick Off Socials we celebrate the joy of just playing games and having fun! And through prayer events, we open the vast treasure trove of Catholic prayers such as the living rosary, Adoration and the prayer to St. Michael.

Finally, look for our annual FOOD FAST Retreat and Archdiocesan Middle School Youth Rally in the spring. These are awesome extended gatherings intended to take our teens deeper in their faith and challenge them to live out their Christian calling.

If you have not yet checked us out, it is never too late. Join us and continue to grow in your faith, meet new people and build up the body of Christ!
