STUDENT & FAMILY WELLNESS

Dear Families,

As the school year comes to a close and summer approaches, many children experience a mix of emotions such as excitement for summer fun, sadness about saying goodbye to routines and teachers, nervousness about changes, or uncertainty about what comes next.

Research shows that children tend to feel less anxious during transitions when they have predictability, emotional connection, and opportunities to talk about their feelings. During these final weeks of school, families can help by keeping routines as consistent as possible, talking positively about summer and the upcoming school year, and creating calm opportunities for children to share worries or questions. Children often feel reassured when adults acknowledge their feelings while also communicating confidence and stability.

It can also be helpful to maintain regular sleep schedules, limit overstimulation when possible, and continue practicing simple coping skills such as deep breathing, outdoor play, reading together, journaling, prayer, mindfulness, or quiet family time. Research also highlights the importance of helping children focus on what they can look forward to, while still honoring the relationships, routines, and memories they may miss.

Simple conversations about favorite memories from the school year, ways they have grown, and hopes for the summer can help children process this transition in healthy and meaningful ways. Even small moments of reassurance and connection can make a big difference emotionally for children during this time of year.

Psychology Today’s article “Parenting Through the Bittersweet End of Another School Year” reminds us that transitions, even positive ones, can bring big feelings for both children and adults.

Thank you for partnering with us throughout the school year and for all the care and encouragement you provide your children each day. Wishing your family a joyful, restful, and meaningful summer ahead!
